Anesthesiologists have historically relied on recommended drug dosages and vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and involuntary muscle movements to monitor consciousness levels.

However, patient state analyzer technology such as Hospira's SEDLine Brain-Function Monitoring System and PSA 4000 provide an analysis of patients' brain activity during surgical procedures involving general anesthesia.

This technology provides a measure of the level of sedation/anesthesia, calculating an index – rated from zero (no activity) to 100 (awake and alert).

SEDLine™ Brain-Function Monitoring System
PSA 4000 Brain-Function Monitoring System

Brain-state monitoring systems:

  • Provide a measure of the patient's response to anesthetic agents
  • Enable anesthesiologists to more precisely monitor anesthesia's effects to patients, which potentially minimizes the risk of under- or over-medicating a patient and reducing possible side effects. This may help speed a patient's recovery and hospital discharge.
